| In einer Stadt im Ruhrgebiet taucht eine junge Frau namens Fiona auf, die als Haushaltshilfe bei der Familie Bauer arbeiten wird. Vater, Mutter, Tochter, Sohn leben für sich, Kommunikation untereinander findet nicht statt. Keinem fällt auf, daß Fiona einen Entschluß gefaßt hat. Nur die Nachbarin fängt an, sich Sorgen zu machen. TOTEM zeigt den Alltag im Leben einer Familie, der mit Erscheinen eines fremden Menschen aus den Fugen gerät. | A young woman called Fiona shows up in a city in the Ruhr area to work for the Bauer family as a housekeeper. Father, mother, daughter and son all live their own lives, co-existing without communicating. Nobody realizes that Fiona has made a decision. Only the neighbor is starting to worry. TOTEM shows a family's routine spinning out of control with the arrival of a stranger. |

| Ort und Zeit laßen sich hier nicht eindeutig zuordnen. Es spielt keine Rolle. Ein Nicht-Ort. Die Protagonisten zeigen sich als Menschen, die antriebslos in den Tag hineinleben, die zwar Details ihrer Umgebung wahrnehmen, jedoch Ungerechtigkeit und Gewalt emotionslos akzeptieren. Die Menschen hier geben sich zufrieden, wenn ihr Alltag routinemäßig wie eh und je abläuft. (Jessica Krummacher) | Time and place are not clearly defined. They do not matter. Everything happens in a non-place. The protagonists are shown as people who live enclosed within their everyday routines without much motivation or thought. Although they recognize details within their surroundings they accept injustice and violence without an emotional response.
